Hello! I’m Vanessa, a trained and experienced proofreader and copyeditor with a love of language and a keen eye for detail. I work with authors, businesses and publishers, and help make your writing the best it can be.
I work with authors of books, articles, essays and dissertations to produce writing that’s accurate, clear, consistent and suitable for your audience. I will polish your writing, removing mistakes and typos that distract your reader and interrupt their enjoyment or concentration.
I help businesses produce correct, concise and consistent documents, online or printed, giving your customers and colleagues a professional impression of your business. Lots of (or even just a few) mistakes on your website, or in a proposal or report, can damage credibility and mean the difference between a new customer buying from you or a potential customer walking away.
Why you might need a proofreader or copyeditor
When you have worked on your document for weeks, months or longer and are so close to its content, it can be difficult (if not impossible) to spot errors in your own writing. It’s easy to read what you ‘know’ you wrote rather than what’s actually there. I bring a fresh pair of eyes and have been trained to spot mistakes and inconsistencies.
You may be one of several people who have contributed to a document, each with a different style of writing; I can help ensure that style and language are made consistent across the complete work, helping to ensure a cohesive and professional image.
A bit about me
I live on the Berkshire/Oxfordshire border with my family and the neighbour’s cat that recently adopted and now owns us.
I have worked freelance since 2018, and recent work has included:
- copyediting social science non-fiction for an academic publisher
- copyediting non-fiction books for a military history publisher
- proofreading novels and non-fiction books for independent authors
- proofreading dissertations and blog posts
I am an Intermediate Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading and subscribe to its code of practice.
Vanessa’s attention to detail, both technically, and stylistically, are invaluable. She is able to turn things around within tight timeframes, but without sacrificing the accuracy that is so important in proof-reading. Friendly and helpful, I have found Vanessa brilliant to work with!
